Dana White: “Tonight is probably Mark Coleman’s last fight in the UFC”

UFC President, Dana White has admitted that UFC “Hall of Famer” Mark Coleman will likely be cut from the promotion following his loss last night at UFC 109 in Las Vegas, Nevada to Randy Couture.

Speaking to MMAMania.com following the fight, Dana said:

“Tonight is probably Mark Coleman's last fight in the UFC. Listen, he looked good against Bonnar. I'm not taking anything away from Mark Coleman -- I have nothing but respect for him. Mark Coleman's always been a stand up guy with me and he'll always be apart of this organization. I just think he'll have a hard time competing with the guys at the top level. Age is a factor with him. This fight was a dream for Coleman. His dream was to fight Randy Couture. And he wanted this thing bad.”

“He went in there and wasn't able to do anything. Randy pretty much beat him everywhere.... It's tough to say it's over and hang 'em up. It's the toughest thing in the world. And I hate dealing with it. It sucks.... Tito's a lot younger than him. He's talking shit to him after he just lost -- this fight that he wanted his whole life. And Tito's fighting Chuck. I'm not even thinking about Tito versus Coleman.”

Even his post fight war of words with Tito Ortiz looks unlikely to be enough to save “The Hammer” from being cut from the promotion. It does seem strange that Coleman was being talked about for a title shot should he get past Couture, only to be cut when he loses.

Wrestling background
Mike Brown wrestled at Bonny Eagle High School in Standish, Maine where he won a state championship in 1992, his junior year. He went on to wrestle at Norwich University where he was known for his ability to focus. Although he was a poor student in high school, he was able to apply his focus to academics and excelled as a scholar-athlete in college. According to Norwich wrestling Coach Rich Hasenfus, Brown was one of the smartest athletes and strongest wrestlers at Norwich.

MMA career
Brown had fought in several MMA events including the UFC and most recently WEC, where he is a former featherweight (145 lb.) champion. In 2005, Brown suffered a near career-ending loss at Deep 22nd in Japan . Brown's opponent, noted leg-lock expert Masakazu Imanari, dislocated Brown's leg to the point that his leg was pulled out and to the side of his knee joint. His only other Pre-WEC losses were to world-class fighters; besides Imanari, only Joe Lauzon, Genki Sudo, and Hermes Franca (all UFC veterans) had defeated Brown en route to Brown's 18-4 record.

WEC career
Riding a six fight win streak, Mike Brown signed with the WEC for the chance to fight the best talent at 145 pounds. His first fight in the WEC was against jiu-jitsu expert Jeff Curran at WEC 34. In each round, Brown matched Curran's stand-up and then took him down and scored from the top with elbows and punches. Brown won all three rounds en route to a unanimous decision victory.

Brown was then offered a shot at the WEC Featherweight Championship with a fight against Urijah Faber at WEC 36. The fight was originally set to take place in Hollywood, Florida on September 10, 2008, but it was postponed to November 5, 2008 due to Hurricane Ike. At the time, Faber had held the title for over two and a half years and was widely considered to be the best fighter at 145 pounds in the world. Brown welcomed the opportunity to fight the best in the world and felt that his training with American Top Team had prepared him well. When the heavily favored Faber attempted a risky elbow strike, Brown countered with a right hook to the jaw, knocking down the champion. Brown then followed with a flurry of unanswered punches and the fight was called off at 2:23 of the first round. Brown won by technical knockout and was declared the new WEC featherweight champion.

MMABAY Radio revisits a sore subject in the meltdown of Affliction Trilogy: Interview with Josh Barnett at IMMAE indicates possible Dana White involvement in the collapse.

MMABAY Radio bounces back with more controversy. Last week the savvy media manipulators put on a clinic creating a buzz in the MMA community by putting Wanderlei Silva and Michael Bisping on at the same time. Both fighters have had a verbal sparing match that started weeks ago, MMABAY Radio added gasoline to the volatile situation.

Chris Greenman (CEO of ProFightNetwok.com) “The blogs and boards blew up! The numbers on the show went through the roof. We may have to put those two together again. I think, for all the criticism that Lee Honish gets for being a (expletive), he got those guys going. The comments and the numbers simply do not lie. I think it’s great when the competition has a blog about MMABAY Radio, MMABAY and Pro Fight Network.”

This week as the discussion of Alistair Overeem's possible departure from Strikeforce to the UFC, MMABAY got on the topic of Affliction and the subsequent melt down of Affliction (live events). During the show Lee Honish discussed possession of an interview with Josh Barnett that few, if any, had ever listened to.

Chris Greenman (CEO of Profightnetwork.com) “Where has Josh been? He is a top ten heavyweight and he has not been seen in a cage since testing positive for steroids. My question is why?”

MMABAY Radio host Lee Honish laid out what he deemed a ‘hypothetical’ explanation for the collapse of Affliction with an interview with Josh Barnett to substantiate his position.

Lee Honish (Host of MMABAY Radio) “Here is my hypothesis based on insider information and my interview with Josh Barnett: Josh, who had tested positive for steroids in the past, making him no stranger to the testing… ‘suddenly’ two weeks before his biggest fight gets a ‘random’ drug test and is found to be positive for a banned substance… which then leads to the demise of the Affliction fighting franchise. What if Dana White approached Josh and offered him cash to test positive to a random test (that has never been done before any other mma event in California)… What if Fedor Emelianenko was approached and asked to not fight a ‘fill in’ fighter (Vitor Bellfort offered)… What if Tom Atencio the owner of Affliction was offered a lucrative sponsorship contract with the UFC (which he was)… What if Fedor told Dana that Brock wasn’t ready and that Brock needed at least a year to be ready (and Fedor signed with Strikeforce)… What if I had audio from Josh Barnett that supports this position?”

MMABAY Radio: "Some pro football kicker named Abbott"
Explicit
January 31, 2010 01:15 PM PST

Profightnetwork.com offers its compelling guest Vince Abbott, former kicker for the chargers, KC Chiefs, usfl... wow! Superbowl!

Vincent Steven Abbott (born May 31, 1958) was an American football player. Born in London, Abott graduated the University of Washington, and was undrafted free agent. He played for a time in the USFL for the Los Angeles Express. After being cut in five previous attempts, he managed to win an NFL job with the San Diego Chargers, during the 1987 pre-season, beating out veteran kicker Rolf Benirschke.

In his first NFL game, the 1987 season opener in Kansas City against the Kansas City Chiefs, Abbott successfully made two out of three field goals, a thirty-two yarder and a thirty-three yarder, the second tying the game at 13 with just over three minutes to play. He would not make an appearance again until the season's seventh game, when he missed two early field goals in a key game against the Cleveland Browns. Nevertheless, he successfully converted a twenty-yard kick with 1:46 remaining in the game, tying the score at 24 apiece, and he was able to convert a 33-yard overtime kick to secure victory for the Chargers, 27-24. That kick lifted the Chargers to 6-1, their best start since their first season in 1961, and put them in first place in their division. Three field goals each against the Indianapolis Colts and the St. Louis Rams made the difference in narrow victories, and helped keep the Chargers momentum going as they ran their record to 8-1.

Although the Chargers would fade, losing their final six games to miss the playoffs, Abbott retained his kicking duties into 1988, having finished the 1987 with a 13 for 22 field goal, with seven of his misses coming from beyond forty yards. Abbott played in 12 games during 1988, for a Chargers team that went 6-10, and converted 8 out of 12 field goals. This was his last season in the NFL; he ended his career with exactly 100 total points, and a 61% field goal percentage.

Vince appeared with his family on Family Feud in 1983. His team was defeated by a family that eventually retired undefeated.

mmabay.co.uk news of the week (part 1)

News of the week from MMABay:

Jay Hieron not guaranteed a title shot following win over Joe Riggs

Strikeforce welterweight contender, Jay Hieron may not get his shot at the title as expected following his win over Joe Riggs last night in Sunrise, Florida after it was revealed Hayoto Sakuri could get the frst shot at Nick Diaz.

Speaking to MMAJunkie.com, Hieron said:

“Man, I've done everything they've asked me. I came in and I fought Taylor. I came in tonight, and I fought Joe Riggs. ... The title shot should definitely be mine right now. I did everything they asked.”

“Diaz didn't want to fight me. That's the only reason I can think of. He didn't say that, but the fight was presented three times on the table. We never fought. I signed the contract every time. I came to fight. Five days out, he didn't go to take his drug test and this and that. Then the next time on the (November) CBS show, we we were scheduled to fight, and Diaz turned up missing. He's on a milk carton. 'Where' Diaz at?' I don't know.”

“That just gives me the impression that he didn't want to fight me. Then he's fighting Zaramoskis on this card. Zaramoskis is a tough guy, but America doesn't know Zaramoskis. Nobody knows him out here.”

“We'll make that fight happen. The longer we wait, the juicer it gets. The bigger it'll be. And hopefully they'll actually put me on TV and make it even juicier.”

Diaz sniped back at Hieron saying:

“I'd rather fight someone that's a little more important than Jay Hieron. His fight wasn't even on the main card. Why am I going to fight him when no one saw [his fight]? I don't even know who he is.”

Hieron’s manager, Ken Pavia also gave his thoughts on the situation, saying this was the fight he put pen to paper for.

“He came here to fight Diaz. That's why he signed with Strikeforce. That's the reason he's here. That's the fight he's been wanting. I [better be] on TV and everything. I'm losing money being on the undercard. I'm not an undercard fighter.”

It’s going to be interesting to see the way this one plays out and how long Strikeforce can deny Hieron a shot at Diaz and the title. Having beat the likes of Riggs, Jesse Taylor and Jason High, surely that shot is just around the corner.

Wanderlei Silva and Michael Bisping Exclusive Interview

Sunday, January 24, 2010

By Isaac Kuhlman

Today on MMABay Radio, Wanderlei Silva and Michael Bisping appeared simultaneously via phone conference to correspond with each other about their upcoming fight in Sydney, Australia at UFC 110. In a bit of a surprise, Silva (known for being a very respectful and gentle guy outside of the cage) was talking a lot more trash than Bisping (who some may know, has been a little brash towards previous opponents). The fighters talked first about each other and then fielded questions from the panel of Lee Honish, Chris Greenman, Michael Pepper and myself.

Silva talked about his plans in his fight versus Bisping:

Respect is only for outside the octagon. Inside the octagon, I respect nobody. What Im thinking is Michael will be afraid to fight with me in the stand-up, because his punches havent knocked out anybody, and hes going to try to give me the double leg with the head outside. Hell have just one takedown, I know which way hes going, I have my game plan to beat him in this style.

Bisping replied with a bit of a chuckle and an appropriately calm response:

First of all he needs to do his homework and look at my record. Theres plenty of knockouts on there. If he feels I havent got the power in my hands, then come spar with me, come hold pads for me. Weve got a fight on the night, and hell discover that. Im not saying this cockily. Im just stating the facts. I have got power in my hands, believe me. Ask the sparring partners Ive been knocking out. Ive got one takedown. Thats laughable. Ive got several takedowns. Im not afraid to fight Wanderlei. This is what he keeps saying. Ive never been afraid to fight Wanderlei or anyone. Im a professional fighter. This is what I do for a living. I enjoy fighting. I enjoy the challenge, and Ive never been afraid of anything, of any man. Im gonna go in there, Im gonna train my arse off and I plan on winning the fight. To say that, Im afraid is rediculous.

Both fighters were pretty straight forward in their game plans not revealing too much strategy other than that neither fighter was going to back down from the other in the fight.

I had to ask them about their overall adjustments to the lighter weight that they have become accustomed to for this fight. Both Bisping and Silva fought for a very long time at the 205lbs. weight class, and both are not cutting down to 185 for this fight.

Bisping noted that he has been down at this weight for several fights now and is used to the training and dieting. Quipping that it's not necessarily a fun way to train, he says, "It's worth it. 100%."

Silva who has just recently been getting down to this weight said he feels much more comfortable now after training with his conditioning coach to get to the weight more naturally. A lot of fans and critics questioned whether or not the weight cut was good for Silva to start so late in his career, and it had a lot to do with the fact that he looked tired during his last fight with Rich Franklin at a catch weight of 195.

However, Silva mostly had to look at his breathing for that fight. Due to his brutal fight history, he had to undergo facial reconstructive surgery to restore the natural airway in his nasal passage. This will be his first fight since the surgery.

Many other very entertaining moments occurred throughout the broadcast including Michael Bisping tearing into co-host and professional fighter, Chris Greenman. To hear the broadcast in its entirety please visit MMABay Radio.

Complete recap of Strikeforce (With lots of Cyborg jokes):

Former Strikeforce 145 pound women’s contender, Marloes Coenen has been giving her thoughts on last night’s showdown with Cris “Cyborg” Santos, saying she feels the bout was brought to an abrupt end.

Speaking to MMAFighting.com, Coenen said:

“I feel beat up. It was a tough fight. She was really good, but I think [the referee] stopped it too soon. I was still moving -- she hit me hard but I could take it. I have to see the fight back of course, but [I kept] moving and my defense was high if I'm correct. She won it. She's the champion. Again, I have to see the fight back because I don't remember anything when I'm fighting -- it's all flashes.”

It appears that Erin Toughill will get the next shot at the dangerous Brazilian inside the cage sometime over the summer months. As for Coenen, she’ll have to work her way back to another shot.

Ode to the Pinoy
maxboxing.com
Thu 19-Nov-2009 09:41

By Julian Kasdin

In 1824 Ludwig van Beethoven completed what many consider to be the single greatest piece of music ever written, Symphony Number 9, also known as the Ode to Joy. This singular piece of music has endured through the years as a stunning achievement, due not only to its totality, being the first symphony to combine the orchestral and choral, but also because of the fact that Ludwig van Beethoven was completely deaf while composing this masterpiece. Boxing has its Beethoven, Freddie Roach, and its Symphony Number 9, Manny Pacquiao (50-3-2 38 KOs). No fighter combines the beauty that is the art of boxing, with sheer physicality that only the most preternaturally gifted athletes possess, like Manny Pacquiao. Similarly, no trainer better personifies the will power and mastery of his art than Freddie Roach, despite his body’s continued physical decline due to Parkinson’s disease.

On Saturday night, Manny Pacquiao and Freddie Roach added yet another title to their ever expanding collection when Pacquiao stopped Miguel Cotto (34-2 27 KOs) in 12 rounds. This fight saw Pacquiao collect a title in his seventh weight division, and has set him on a collision course with current lineal welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather (40-0, 25 KOs). Regardless of whether he beats Mayweather or not, Pacquiao has already cemented his place as the greatest fighter of his generation and one of the greatest fighters in history, having captured lineal titles in four weight classes and, as previously mentioned, titles in seven separate weight divisions-two feats unmatched in the history of boxing. In fact, you have to go back to Henry Armstrong and his three lineal titles to find Pacquiao’s equal. Pacquiao’s win Saturday was one of many against the stiffest opposition this sport has to offer, adding Cotto’s name to the likes of Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales, Ricky Hatton, Juan Manuel Marquez, Oscar de la Hoya, and Lehlohonolo Ledwaba.

What is perhaps most interesting in all of this is the partnership between Roach and Pacquiao. Freddie Roach, a former boxer from Massachusetts, compiled a 39-13-0 record with one no-contest as a fighter. Hardly the stuff of legends, his career as a boxer ultimately brought upon him the early onset of Parkinson’s disease. Due to his illness, Roach is gradually losing control over his body. In stark contrast to the supremely talented Pacquiao, Roach’s ability to do even the most mundane tasks deteriorates daily. Yet despite the uphill battle he faces, he has been able to take a cacophony of violence in Manny Pacquiao and shape it into the most complete pugilist many of us will ever see. Unable to physically demonstrate what he seeks to teach his charge, he instead guides him via an understanding of the Sweet Science that very few possess. His almost perfect ability to assess Pacquiao’s strengths and weaknesses, combined with the insight of how to exploit the subtlest weaknesses in the opponent, is the stuff of legend, the kind of artistry that transcends generations.

Many of us may not be able to comprehend just what we have before us. Some simply see Pacquiao as a human wrecking ball, a torrent of punches that leaves an incomparable list of elite victims in its wake. That, however, is merely the overture to this truly great symphony. The punches and their power are to be admired, but it is the combination of physical gifts, skill and mental acuity that is artfully melded by a master that is most awe inspiring. Manny Pacquiao is our Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, a piece of art so singularly great that it stands the test of time; and Freddie Roach is our Beethoven, an incomparable genius who is able to overcome the most daunting of physical challenges, and in doing so leaves his indelible mark on the pugilistic world.

Fight_Net Radio 11/1/09 "Dana White vs Lee Honish"
Explicit
November 01, 2009 07:54 PM PST

“Pro Fight Network & Fight_Net Radio makes wild allegations of the UFC: blood doping, conspiracy, rules tampering, co-ownership of Yahoo, monopolization, organized crime involvement and political tampering.”

FNR & PFN long outspoken position on the UFC came to a head this Sunday as Lee Honish, Chris Greenman and Julian Kasdan Explained every parallel the UFC had from organized crime to fighters that “might be” using banned substances.

The always even keeled and political voice of Pro Fight Network Chris Greenman had this to say “I think Lee is very upset with Dana ‘snubbing’ him after Dana agreed to an information exchange for some breathing room while he put a Yahoo – UFC deal together… Dana didn’t deliver. So Lee, being Lee, blew a gasket and aired every bit of dirty laundry.”

The information ranged from ‘what 10 ten pound for pound fighters do you think are dirty’ to ‘Yahoo, UFC, Dana White, The Fertitta brothers, organized crime and Nevada political figures are all tied together’ to ‘Dana White and Scott Cocker have ties’.

Julian Kasdan co-host of Fight_Net Radio “Its staggering once he (Lee) gets on a roll. The lines he drew are all very accurate. Yahoo, MMAweekly.com and MMAjunkie.com all appear to have some kind of deal with Dana White and the UFC.”

For nearly a month Fight_Net Radio with the support of Pro Fight Network have waged a seemingly endless war with Dana White and the UFC, the insertion and plausibility of anything that they have ‘speculated’ would be hard to dispute by anyone in the MMA community.

Chris Greenman (from Fight_Net Radio) “If the NFL tag is about the national football league, then they don’t have information about the CFL or arena football… They should carry a MMA link for everything other than the UFC or WEC”

To further prove their point Fight_Net Radio then read Yahoo’s top ten pound for pound list. Dan Henderson who recently failed to sign a deal with the UFC fell out of the top 10. Fedor Emelenako considered by many to be the very best fighter pound for pound fighter on the planet is ranked number 3 and is not a UFC fighter and is co-owner of rival M-1 and under contract to Scott Coker’s Strike force franchise (set to air primetime Saturday on CBS television).

Lee Honish had this to say on the whole show “No comment… Wait, the show will stand for itself. Dana White in a candid email asked Chris and I to be more political now that Pro Fight Network is a one of the top websites in the world (top 100,000 website). He shafted me and I’m pissed! Ill say it again, I love the fighters and the fans but there is a difference between a ‘ufc’ fan and a ‘mma’ fan. I’m tired of giving Dana White and the Fertittas a pass to rape and pillage the fans and fighters for their own profit.”

Yahoo had sent this note to the Fight_Net Radio email address:

Dana White the fertitta brothers and UFC LIVE part 2
Explicit
November 01, 2009 12:50 PM PST

He will turn over the control and hosting of the boxing show to the other co-hosts 3.) He will extend invatations to all previous on air talent to return 4.) He will be nice and say no harsh words about fighters, fights and promoters.

This makes it a very very interesting fight if Arreola wins the fight.

Starting with the very first, very bad episode when it was…. Well just me! Then came Matt, then Chris Erskine. The rest was history.

From stories to recaps to play by play, there is even the complete pride event Chris Erskine and I covered 2 years ago where Fedor beats Marc Coleman to a pulp. Boxing? How about the best damn boxing episode ever… that’s what its title was.

This is 4 years of select Audio for you to enjoy over the Labor Day Holiday and its about 8 hours of stuff…

Ghost steps up to challenge South Africa’s Klassen

After watching his wife battle leukemia for the past two years, Robert Guerrero isn’t intimidated by tactics that might give other boxers pause.

When he steps in another unfriendly ring in Houston on Saturday night to face an unfamiliar opponent, Guerrero says he won’t think about the taunts lobbed at him by South Africa’s Malcolm Klassen and his trainer. He’ll concentrate on recent ring lessons from Shane Mosley, cemented by the life lessons of Casey Guerrero’s own fight, which she’s winning.

“There’s nothing you can say to me that’s going to get me off my game,” Guerrero said. “People have tried, but I’m focused on winning a title in my second weight class. You can’t get that out of my head by putting something in there.”

Guerrero (24-1-1, 17 KOs) will fight for Klassen’s IBF 130-pound belt shortly before Juan Diaz faces Paulie Malignaggi at the Toyota Center on HBO.

Malignaggi already was an underdog in Diaz’s hometown before he betrayed his distraction by complaining about the ring judges and officials, so nobody will be surprised if Guerrero-Klassen turns out to be a more entertaining, competitive bout.

Guerrero is a two-time featherweight champion who gave up his IBF title last year to move up to 130 pounds. Klassen (24-4-2, 15 KOs) also is a two-time champion who has lost just once since 2001.

Guerrero has traveled to Denmark to win a title fight in front of a hostile, projectile-throwing crowd. He fought a few days after his wife’s cancer diagnosis, a few hours after sleeping on Casey’s hospital room floor, and he defiantly sat out nearly a year while fighting to change promoters.

Yet the Gilroy, Calif., native still faces questions about his determination, largely because of his disappointing no-contest against Daud Yordan last March in which Guerrero said he couldn’t continue because of a second-round cut.

That decision brought criticism on Guerrero, and Klassen’s camp noticed.

“The one area where Guerrero is going to be tested is in the heart department, and we’ve noticed the heart isn’t too big,” Nick Durandt, Klassen’s trainer, said Thursday.

Guerrero usually trains for his fights in his Bay Area hometown, but he moved south to Big Bear for this fight, using the boxing cradle’s high altitudes and resources. He also got six weeks of sparring with Mosley, the 37-year-old champion who can mimic any boxer’s style.

“After all the stuff I’ve gone through the past two years, it was nice to get away,” Guerrero said. “Just being out there isolated from family and friends and being able to just focus on training, it was real relaxing, and it’s what I needed. Now I know why (fighters) go up there.”

The matchup is an intriguing contrast in styles, with The Ghost attempting to counter Klassen’s prodigious work rate with the athleticism that sparked his nickname. Klassen is 3 inches shorter than Guerrero, but throws punches by the dozens.

“This fight will open up doors,” Klassen said. “I’m not a person who needs a lot of money. I just want to make my name.”

The fight also is a risk for Klassen, although he calls Guerrero “a one-dimensional fighter.” Klassen is fighting outside South Africa for just the second time in a career that includes two title belts, but no name recognition in this hemisphere.

“This is the stage you’ve got to perform on if you want to be noticed,” Durandt said. “I believe this was the right decision to make. This was the right voluntary challenger to face. You have to strike when the iron is hot. The iron is hot now.”

Mosley was eager to foster his investment in Guerrero as a partner in Golden Boy Promotions, but he also used the challenge to stay in shape for his next fight, which he expects to happen Dec. 5—though he doesn’t yet have an opponent after being turned down by Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. Negotiations with WBC welterweight champ Andre Berto also have bogged down.

“He has great hitting power for his weight,” Mosley said of Guerrero. “He hits like he’s 170. He doesn’t hit a like a normal guy his weight. … He’s a throwback fighter. He’ll put everything he has into his fights. He’s on time every day, he listens when I tell him something, and he’s not afraid to try things I tell him.”

Diaz gets Malignaggi over decision

HOUSTON (AP)—Juan Diaz thinks he proved that he’s a top contender again. Paulie Malignaggi thinks three judges in Texas prevented him from becoming one.

Diaz beat Malignaggi in a 12-round, unanimous decision on Saturday night to win the vacant NABO junior welterweight championship.

Diaz, a Houston native, fought the last 10 rounds with a bloody cut over his left eye. But the hometown crowd at the Toyota Center cheered every punch Diaz landed, and Malignaggi thought that swayed the judges.

The scorecards were 118-110, 116-112 and 115-113 in favor of Diaz. Malignaggi called the decision “ridiculous” and asked for a rematch in New York City, his hometown.

Diaz (35-2) ran to the four corners of the ring and saluted the cheering fans after the decision was announced, giving him a bounce-back win after he was knocked out by Juan Manuel Marquez at the Toyota Center in February.

“I can fight at 135 pounds, I can fight at 140,” said Diaz. “I think I’m ready to take on anybody now. Whoever wants to fight me, bring it on.”

Marquez will fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. on Sept. 19 and Diaz hopes his victory on Saturday night puts him in line to face the winner of that one. He said he’d also welcome a rematch with Malignaggi.

Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya said Ricky Hatton is another possible opponent for Diaz.

“We like going to the fighter and saying, ‘These are opportunities, but who would you like to fight?”’ De La Hoya said. “We’ll discuss it when the time is right.”

Malignaggi (27-2) said before the fight that he was worried about the judges, especially Gale Van Hoy and Raul Caiz. He pointed out that those two were judges when Houston native Rocky Juarez earned a draw with featherweight champion Chris John at the Toyota Center in February, a decision that Malignaggi thought was unfair.

Van Hoy had the 118-110 scorecard for Saturday’s main even and Malignaggi blasted the judge again. Caiz scored it 115-113 and the third judge, David Sutherland, had the 116-112 score.

“You don’t see too many good decisions in Texas, with out-of-towners against Texas fighters,” Malignaggi said. “I put my two cents in before. I said, ‘I don’t want Gale Van Hoy and I don’t want Raul Caiz.’ Raul had it pretty close. I thought I won the fight, but at least he had it close.

“But there is no way anyone won that fight 118-110,” Malignaggi said. “Gale Van Hoy just filled out his scorecard, on purpose, to (rob) Paulie Malignaggi. I don’t know how Gale Van Hoy keeps getting jobs.”

De La Hoya also questioned Van Hoy’s scorecard, but not the outcome of the fight.

“I’ve been in close fights, just like every other fighter has been in close fights,” De La Hoya said. “Sometimes you’re on the short end. That’s the way boxing is.”

Malignaggi landed 191 punches to Diaz’s 178, according to the official statistics. Malignaggi threw 949 punches to Diaz’s 663 and Malignaggi controlled the hard-charging Diaz with sharp left jabs and quick combinations.

Diaz hit Malignaggi with a hard right in the last minute of the second round, but by the time the bell sounded, Diaz had blood trickling down his face.

Diaz was also cut over his right eye in the eighth round of the Marquez fight, and Marquez knocked him out in the ninth. Diaz fought through it this time, landing several hard shots in the later rounds.

“I lost two of my fights because of cuts,” Diaz said. “This time, I let my corner work on it, I stayed calm, relaxed and everything worked out.”

Malignaggi, dressed in flourescent purple trunks with black and white tassles, kept attacking Diaz’s eye and the cut started bleeding again in the 10th round.

The hometown crowd chanted “Diaz! Diaz!” in every round, but Malignaggi seemed to have more energy at the end. The two exchanged hard lefts in the final minute and embraced in the middle of the ring when the bell sounded.

Earlier Saturday night, Robert Guerrero stopped Malcolm Klassen in a 12-round, unanimous decision to take Klassen’s IBF junior lightweight belt.

Klassen started landing hard right hands in the fifth round and opened a cut over Guerrero’s left eye by the seventh. Guerrero also said he broke his left hand during the fight, but he used his significant height and reach advantage to keep Klassen at bay.

Also, Danny Jacobs earned the vacant NABO middleweight belt with a 10-round decision over Ishe Smith.

(PressMediaWire) Irvine, CA – IMMAE announced today the official launch of their highly-touted online trade community. The community is entitled the IVTC, an acronym standing for the “IMMAE Virtual Trade Community”. The IVTC will be an online extension of IMMAE’s physical show capabilities.

The world is rapidly changing, and US based markets are experiencing nothing less than an upheaval of epic proportions. The landscape of US based business and advertising methods are changing rapidly and are leaving those not ready to accept these changes far behind. IMMAE has created the IVTC in recognition of this paradigm shift and in recognition of staying current with the times.

The IVTC, which IMMAE believes will be one of the most advanced tradeshow platforms on the planet, will feature a rich set of tools for the IMMAE exhibitor. The IVTC will have online appointment setting, virtual buyer interfacing, product catalog displays, automated advertising management and much more. The IVTC will not stop here, and will offer similar feature sets to fight promotions, buyers, and industry professionals. This will culminate into a highly interactive virtual community focused completely on business, commerce and networking.

The IVTC changes the value proposition that IMMAE offers to its various types of attendees from exhibitors to buyers. It will allow exhibitors to begin interfacing with industry professionals and buyers before the actual tradeshow event, and to continue to do so long after it is over. This means that revenue generation is possible outside the boundaries of a single weekend. IMMAE’s goal is to create increased return on investment for exhibitors and other attendees and to make this platform the definitive and defacto platform which all MMA companies seek to be a part of.

Select exhibitors are already participating in the IVTC beta testing program and wide scale roll out will begin in the next 2 weeks. IMMAE has the ambitious goal of generating revenue and contacts for the majority of its exhibitors by June 1st, 2009, well before the commencement of the show. If successful in this goal, it will set IMMAE apart and ahead of many of the largest mainstream tradeshows which exist today.

You must give it 23 minutes to get to the amazing part! I promise this is the best on ever! The show is dedicated to Arturo Gatti

Boxing Is Missing A Piece of Its Heart Now
By Jason Petock, DoghouseBoxing (July 12, 2009)
Today is a sad and tragic day for all fans
of boxing, as it has been reported that Arturo Gatti
has left this earthly plane. No fighter will be able to replace the ferocity and true heart that Arturo fought with in the ring, a man who literally encompassed what it meant to be a fighter and actually fight for a living, not just go through the motions. He showed us all what a man could do when he would put it all on the line everytime he laced up the gloves, and his loss is saddening and too abrupt. Boxing is missing a large piece of its heart right now that cannot be replaced, that piece was Arturo “Thunder” Gatti.

I actually never had the honor or privilege of meeting Arturo in person. Nor have I ever seen any of his bouts live, although I always wanted to. Out of all of the fighters out there, living or deceased, I honestly have to say that Gatti was truly my favorite. I had tried in vain once to get an interview with him. Luckily, I got to speak to Arturo for about 3 minutes, and as one of his biggest fans, those were the best three minutes of my life. I was humbled when I was told by Danny McDermott
, also a fighter, that Arturo had read an article of mine and that it motivated him and he agreed with what I had written. It made me feel proud that a hero of mine had taken notice of me and my small little world. I’ll never forget any of that.

Boxing media over time hasn’t been particularly too kind to Arturo Gatti. When they weren’t dissecting his opponents, or judging him very harshly, they were immediately rushing him out the door, even when he still had a quarter tank of gas left in the tank. He fought everyone and anyone he could, and refused to duck fighters, something that has become commonplace these days in a weaker society it seems. I always defended the man in my writing, and chose not to follow the crowds, who are generally more interested in sensationalism and less interested in telling the truth. I write as a fan and because I love the sport, and technically I am not a writer. At least in the sense of boxing journalism. Boxing writers write to make money and deface fighters careers often, I write as a fan like I said and make no money doing it.

What is even sadder is that now those very same writers who would slam Arturo Gatti and his career will now hop off of their original bandwagons and get onto other ones, so that they can shine in the fall of a great fighter. I miss you Arturo already, although we never knew one another, you were always a hero of mine and someone who I looked up to and admired from a distance. Your wars in the ring gave me hope in troubling times. You let me know that anything could be accomplished and that it is a man’s heart and will that make him persevere and nothing more. I only wish that I could have met you. Maybe one day I’ll meet you in Heaven, if they’ll take me that is.

Goodbye Arturo “Thunder” Gatti. They say when someone dies that the sky opens up and the angels cry for them. I know they are crying for you as well Champ. You are missed by all and there is a void in boxing where you once were. There can never be a fighter to come along and take your place and your career is inspirational, motivating and a lesson for us all. Rest well Arturo, you’ve earned it.
