The best of Fight_Net Radio

Here you go! the stuff that made us famous or me infamous. I have compiled a fun little sampler of segments for you all to enjoy.

By Request, just Elaina Maxwell (last week)!

Elaina Maxwell & James Hergot, great segment doing what the MMA team does best: the news, bagging on Tito’s big head, busting my ass about the Danny Bonaduce fight and most of all trying to get Elaina Maxwell to crack on nudity and guys.

Vault Classics: The best of: Chris Erskine.

The Original ‘Here comes the BOOM’ intro by POD that we used for years. I recently changed it only because I encountered it being used the very same way on 2 different broadcasts (Nobody listens to the show… SURE!)

Chris Erskine, The original Chris Greenman and Julian Kasdin all rolled into one. Here is an excerpt from CBS in San Diego (103.7 freefm, no really I was on real terrestrial radio and still am in a few markets). This call took place right after Danny Bonaduce verbally assaulted me (I included a few clips of him being abusive).

Lidell Vs, Ortiz II Round 3, More with Chris Erskine. Live from the stands, Chris and I with a portable recording device bringing you the final round. Listen to the crowed they are pulling for Ortiz.

IFL Fighting, More with the Chris Erskine Love fest. IFL fighting. Funny as hell. I am just a dick, Chris is trying so hard to be serious.

-Amir Khan W Tech Dec. 5 Marco Antonio Barrera (please read Matt's story on fightnetboxing.com before show). *Were we impressed by Khan's performance, which was helped along by a nasty cut?*What's next for Khan? Marquez, Casamayor or Diaz?*Did Barrera get a fair shake?*Is Barrera finished?*Did Barrera's decision not to quit hurt Robert Guerrero's assertion last week that his cut was too severe to continue? Barrera's cut appeared much worse. -Ola Afolabi TKO 9 Enzo Maccarinelli (please read Matt's story on fightnetboxing.com before show) -Roman Martinez TKO 4 Nicky Cook (please read Matt's story on fightnetboxing.com before show). -Boxing fans definitely got their money's worth Saturday, as the Khan-Barrera PPV telecast featured a total of five entertaining fights - three of which were championship-caliber. It was also a refreshing change to hear the British perspectives on boxing, including a roundtable of former champions that included Johnny Nelson and Glenn McCrory. Former WBC lightweight champion Jim Watt provided the color commentary.Overall, a nice change of pace from the familiar refrains of HBO's Jim Lampley and Co. And a good bargain at $24 for boxing fans. -Lucian Bute KO 4 Fulgencio Zuniga (retains IBF super middleweight title): An easy win for Bute, who looked impressive in dismantling a smaller fighter. One of the finishing punches - a vicious left to the body - was one for the highlight reel. PREVIEW:Vitali Klitschko (36-2) vs. Juan Carlos Gomez (44-1) (ESPN). Klitschko steps in the ring for the first time since dominating Samuel Peter for the WBC title. His opponent is the little-known Gomez, who probably wouldn't have been picked if he didn't have flaws. Roy Jones Jr. (52-5) vs. Omar Sheika (27-8) (PPV): This is part of Jones' combination Boxing-MMA card. Too bad the boxing part isn't PPV-worthy. At this stage of Jones' career, who knows what could happen? Sheika will always be tough. It could end up being interesting. Week in Reviewoh go onames Kirkland TKO 6 Joel Julio: (Everybody, please read Matt's post-fight story before going on air). -Victor Ortiz TKO 2 Mike Arnaouitis: (read Matt's story). -Robert Guerrero No Contest 2 Daud Yordan: (read Matt's story). -Delvin Rodriguez W 12 Shamone Alvarez: Welterweight Rodriguez, two fights removed from his near-disastrous victory over Oscar Diaz, puts himself in good position with a tough win over Alvarez. The fight was non-descript most of the way, with Rodriguez holding a slight edge with his boxing skills. However, he had to hang on for dear life in the final round, as Alvarez rocked him. Rodriguez is getting ever-closer to a title shot. Is he someone who could make noise in the 147-pound ranks? Preview:-Friday, March 13, Lucian Bute (23-0, 18 KOs) vs. Fulgencio Zuniga (22-3-1, 18 KOs), in Montreal (Showtime). The always-exciting IBF super middleweight champ Bute returns to the ring for the first time since his narrow escape against Librado Andrade in October. Zuniga has fought - but come up short - against the best including Daniel Santos (L 12) and Kelly Pavlik (TKO by 9). Saturday, March 14, Amir Khan (19-1, 15 KOs) vs. Marco Antonio Barrera (65-6, 43 KOs) in Manchester, England (PPV): A bizarre - yet intriguing - matchup in the junior lightweight division that features a young up-and-comer and an old warhorse. Barrera hasn't had a major fight since October 2007, when he lost a decision to Manny Pacquiao. Now, he's being asked to upset the bigger, younger, faster Khan in Khan's native England. Not that Khan is invincible. He was knocked out last year by a journeyman. Should be an interesting crossroads fight. Saturday, March 14: Arthur Abraham (28-0, 23 KOs)) Lajuan Simon (21-0-2, 12 KOs) in Kiel, Germany: Abraham keeps busy with an outing against the IBFs No. 11-ranked contender, the nondescript Philadelphian Simon. Probably another easy defense for Abraham, who is angling for a 2009 showdown with Kelly Pavlik. Lapachet Report. This Week in Boxing History:March 9, 1984, Tim Witherspoon W 12 Greg Page: Witherspoon upsets the underachieving Page in a fight that was typical of 1980s heavyweight boxing - dreadfully boring. "Terrible Tim" picked up the WBC heavyweight title that had been stripped from Larry Holmes. March 10, 1986, Marvin Hagler TKO 11 John Mugabi; Thomas Hearns KO 1 James Shuler. In a rainy night in Las Vegas, Hagler gets by "The Beast" in a grueling affair that is 1986's "Fight of the Year" and the "Hitman" destroys Shuler in typical fashion. The next step was supposed to be a rematch of their classic 1985 fight, but it never happened. Hagler instead fought - and lost to - Sugar Ray Leonard. March 13, 1993: Michael Carbajal KO 7 Humberto "Chiquita" Gonzalez: In 1993's "Fight of the Year," Carbajal gets off the canvas twice to knock out archrival Gonzalez. It was the first of three fights. Gonzalez won the next two with careful boxing - refusing to engage Carbajal and earning a reputation as a master stylist. March 13, 1999: Lennox Lewis D 12 Evander Holyfield: Perhaps the worst ripoff in history, Lewis dominates Holyfield over 12 rounds, only to get a draw. Lewis' size and long jab proved the difference, not that it mattered to judge Eugenia Williams, who will forever be infamous for turning in a 115-113 score in favor of Holyfield - who hardly landed a punch all night.

-The big news, obviously, was the suspension of Antonio Margarito by the California State Athletic Commission. It appears that, whatever happens, Margarito's reputation will forever be marred. Let's talk about his legacy, and if he can ever be trusted or liked again. -Juan Urango decisions Herman Ngoudjo to recapture the IBF junior welterweight title he lost to Ricky Hatton two years ago. Urango won on the strength of two third-round knockdowns and constant pressure. Urango is hoping the big win propels him to a money fight with the winner of Pacquiao-Hatton. -Darchinyan vs. Arce, opening thoughts (first Drew, then Matt, then Lee)-Can Arce actually win this fight? What will he have to do to win?-Is Darchinyan too confident for his own good? He did, afterall, get drilled by Nonito Donaire in 07.-What's next for the winner? The loser?-Another fine offering by Showtime.-Another big fight in California Lapachet Report This week in boxing history:Feb. 4, 1984, Donald Curry W 15 Marlon Starling: Curry uses his superior speed and boxing skills to dominate Starling, whom he had narrowly outpointed two years earlier. It was the first indication of Curry's possible greatness, as he retained his WBA welterweight title. Feb. 4, 1989, Marlon Starling TKO 9 Lloyd Honeyghan: Exactly five years to the day of his disappointing loss to Curry, Starling turns in his career-best performance with a thrashing of England's Honeyghan, previously considered the best 147-pounder in the world. With the win, Starling won the WBC welterweight title. Feb. 6, 1988, Greg Haugen W 15 Vinny Pazienza: Eight months after losing a controversial split decision to Pazienza in Paz's hometown of Cranston, R.I., Haugen exacts revenge with a sterling performance. No controversy this time, as "Mutt" Haugen cruises to victory behind a stiff left jab and fine boxing skills. Feb. 6, 1987, Mark Breland KO 7 Harold Volbrecht: Amateur star Breland wins his first world title with an easy knockout of South Africa's Volbrecht, an undeserving title challenger.

LaPACHET REPORT By Andrew Lapachet FightNetBoxing.com JONES BACK IN RING AND THE RISE OF THE HEAVYWEIGHTS Interesting fights on tap for boxing's glamour division Ring legend Roy Jones Jr. (52-5, 38 KO’s) isn’t done fighting yet. Reports are that will fight journeyman Omar Sheika (27-8, 18 KO’s) in his hometown of Pensacola , Florida. In what looks to be the ex-four division champ’s last fight, Jones couldn’t have picked an easier opponent. Sheika has never been a world champion, even though he has fought for a title four times. He has just one noticeable win, a victory over Glen Johnson, but that was nine years ago. He hasn’t fought in almost a year-and-a-half, and has had just three fights in four years (1-2, 1 KO). Yes sir, it sounds like Jones’ farewell tour is in full gear now. If he loses this fight, he’ll retire on the spot. If he wins, he’ll live to fight another day. That’s usually how these situations work -Could it be the heavyweights might be on the upside in 2009. Some intriguing matchups are being signed and considered early in the year. First up will be WBC champion Vitali Klitschko (36-2, 35 KO’s), who is set up to face former cruiserweight WBC champion Juan Carlos Gomez (44-1, 35 KO’s) on March 21. Then, this week (WHO?) reported that negotiations between IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (52-3, 46 KO’s) and former WBC, WBO, WBA cruiserweight Champion David Haye (22-1, 21 KO’s) were going along fine despite a few small snags. Reportedly, if Haye’s match-up with Wladimir falls apart, the younger Klitschko would then go after undefeated Chris Arreola (24-0, 21 KO’s). Maybe there’s hope for the heavyweights after all. -Fresh off his knockout victory over Manuel Esparza on January 14, super middleweight Edison Miranda wasted no time calling out his next opponent. Last week, Miranda called out former middleweight champ Jermain Taylor, who is looking for a March opponent on Showtime. Reportedly, Miranda feels this fight should have been made two years ago but felt that it never happened because of his inability to make 160 pounds. Now that they’re both fighting at 168 pounds and healthy, Miranda feels there’s no reason a fight shouldn’t be made now. Both fighters’ are at the crossroads of their careers, and it would make for an interesting fight. Other names that have been mentioned as Taylor ’s March opponent: Carl Froch, Allen Green, and Andre Ward. -Junior welterweight Vivian Harris has reportedly dropped out of his proposed fight against rising prospect Victor Ortiz (23-1, 18 KO’s) because of managerial issues. The fight was to be the co-feature on HBO’s tripleheader on March 7. Now it looks like Ortiz is going to be matched up against seasoned veteran in “Mighty” Mike Arnoutis (21-2-2, 10 KO’s). Mighty Mike will be a good test for the young Oxnard native. In 2004, he fought former world champion Juan Urango to a draw and in 2007 he had back-to-back decision loses to Ricardo Torres and Kendall Holt. That’s three fights with three top ten contenders – one who happens to be a champion (Holt), and one who could be (Urango fights for the vacant IBF junior welterweight title Friday on ESPN2). Throw in the fact that Arnoutis also has stopped solid veterans like Juaquin Gallardo and Jesse Feliciano, and he starts looking like a harder opponent than the first option, Harris.

1.SHANE MOSLEY TKO 9 ANTONIO MARGARITO.

Well, so much for the “experts.” Mosley, appearing reborn, destroyed 4-1 favorite Margarito to win the WBA welterweight title before the largest crowd in Staples Center history – 20,820. It was a stunningly brilliant performance for “Sugar Shane,” who won his first world title 12 years ago and beat Oscar De La Hoya in the same building almost nine years ago. Plenty to talk about as Mosley’s win is an early candidate for “Upset of the Year.”

Topics for discussion

-Intro (throw it to Adam, who was live at the fight; let him give his impressions of the sights and sounds at the Staples Center ).

After Adam’s intro, throw it to the rest of us for a brief summary of how we saw the fight and how we felt Mosley won.

Then start with the following specific questions.

-Was Mosley that good or Margarito that bad?

-What happened to Margarito? And did the hand-wrapping controversy beforehand affect his focus?

-Speaking of the hand-wrapping controversy, does the California State Athletic Commission’s revelation of an illegal pad in Margarito’s handwraps before Saturday’s fight taint Margarito? Does it taint his July victory over Miguel Cotto and the other big victories of his career?

-What’s next for Mosley? He has suddenly set himself up for huge paydays against the likes of the Manny Pacquiao-Ricky Hatton winner, a third fight with Oscar De La Hoya or possibly a rematch with Miguel Cotto. Does he have a chance against Pacquiao?

-What’s next for Margarito? Once hailed as the next Julio Cesar Chavez, Margarito – much like Kelly Pavlik three months ago – blew a huge opportunity by losing to an older fighter. Can he ever bounce back and regain the stature he enjoyed before the fight? And is he lucky that he never faced Pacquiao?

-De La Hoya NOT in attendance at Staples; instead, down the road at MMA event in Anaheim . Adam’s column timely and reasons De La Hoya should have gone to Margarito-Mosley fight seems very relevant now. When was the last time DLH didn’t show up to one of his major cards? In his hometown, no less. It was as though he was purposely avoiding the boxing crowds that were sure to boo him following his quit job against Pacquiao.

-The largest crowd in Staples history watched the Mosley-Margarito fight (20,820 strong, with dozens of celebrities). That’s pretty amazing when you consider the MMA event was down the road and that boxing was supposedly “dead.” Reports of its demise were premature. Maybe this is what happens when a show is reasonable and it’s on HBO – not pay-per-view.

Let’s talk about what the great numbers mean.

-Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero wins in 43 seconds. Report from Adam

Listen to Fight_Net Radio Sunday Nights...
01/11/09

Listen to Fight Net Radio as Lee Honish (host), Matt Aguilar (El Paso Times), Andrew Lapachet (Primer Round Magazine), and Adam Ramirez, (fightnetlive.com) go through the week in boxing. For two hours, we try to hit on every topic in the sport. The first hour is dedicated to fight results and future bouts, while the second half is focused on major topics during the week.

This week in the first hour, we will discuss the fights on ESPN 2 this past Friday night between Gamboa/ Gonzalez, & Solis/ Burnett. Plus we’ll discuss the upcoming fight this weekend on HBO between Andre Berto and Luis Collazo.

On the Lapachet report We will be discussing the following topics…

Pacquiao/Hatton in Jeopardy!

The Mega fight that was supposed to go down May 2nd, hit a major snag this week. Seems Hatton wants a 50/50 split and Pacquiao won’t budge from 60/40. Both parties have already threatened to pull out. Hatton’s camp went as far as to say they have had contact with Floyd Mayweather Jr. on a possible re-match. Sad if this fight can’t get made, it’s kind of a guaranteed classic, all they have to do is sign. Hatton should respect Pacquiao’s status as #1 fighter P-4-P, and Manny should respect the money the British fans will bring in that weekend, 55/45 anybody?

Pacquiao says he can beat Margarito

For those who think Pac-man is going to take his beautiful win over Oscar De La Hoya and set off into the sunset at Jr. welterweights, think again! Manny Pacquiao decided to throw a counter shot back at the best Welterweight in the world, by vowing to beat him if the fight gets signed. Pacquiao believes he his to fast Margarito and would easily outbox him. What a tremendous fight, if it gets made. If Manny Pacquaio beats the man, they call the Tijuana Tornado, would he become the best Mexican Fighter of All Time? This has to be the only reason why Pac-man wants this fight. He’s trying the Oscar approach of, “beat them all so I’m the only one left to cheer for.” Bob Arum always say’s, “Mexican fans run boxing.”

Chris John vs. Rocky Juarez 02/28/09

The fight that has seemed to take years to make has finally been signed, as WBA Featherweight Champion Chris John (42-0-1, 22 KO’s) will make his American debut against solid contender in Rocky Juarez (28-4, 20 ko’s). The fight will be on the under-card of J.M. Marquez vs. J. Diaz. That set to go down on Feburary 28th.

Montiel has weight problems, Donaire fight up in the air.

One of the best fights for 2009 was scratched this week as it seem WBO Champion Jr. Bantamweight Fernando Montiel has had to pull out of scheduled fight against IBF Champion Flyweight Nonito Donaire. Reports are that Montiel cannot make the weight any more, and will have to move up to the Bantamweight division. He might fight Eric morel for the vacant WBO Bantamweight championship but nothing is set in stone yet. As for Nonito they’re looking at replacing his opponent with top ten contender Jose “Carita” Lopez (38-7-2, 32 KO’s), but like the Monteil situation nothing is set as of now.

Bernard Hopkins Added To ESPN2 FNF

He’s a two division Champion, P-4-P fighter, and a walking legend. Now add boxing analyst to his resume. Bernard Hopkins was signed by ESPN2 this week and had his debut this past Friday night on the season opener. What a treat for the die-hard fans, Hopkins being one of the smartest fighters the ring has ever seen should have a tremendous amount of knowledge to give to the audience.

This week Andrew Lapachet, Guest Adam Ramirez & Lee Honish bring you all the boxing you can handle!

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is ready to return to the ring?

News from Grand Rapids is that he has a comeback plan set and is gunning for Pound-4-Pound Champion Manny Pacquiao. If these reports were true Pacquiao would have to accept this challenge with open arms. Why would he have a fight in between and allow Mayweather time to work off ring rust. Besides why risk the opportunity of making this mega fight? Manny Pacquiao peeked last Saturday night when he destroyed Oscar De La Hoya in his first fight at the welterweight division. Everyone that didn’t know Manny Pacquaio before the fight, knows him now after the beat down. Even the ones who didn’t think he deserved to be pound-for-pound now know that Manny Pacquaio is the best fighter in the world, hands down. You want to see what happens when the earth stands still, put these two champions in the ring next summer. Mayweather vs. Pacquiao would stop time for 48 minutes around the world. Both of these men are known from shore to shore which would make this and historical fight.

Does Hatton Really Have Room To Talk?

Early this week Ricky Hatton came out and told Mayweather to back off, that Manny Pacquiao was going to fight him first. Right away I asked myself does he really have an option? Last thing I remember was Floyd knocking Hatton out. Early next year should be the final promotions for a summer showdown between the two pound-for-pound champions. Manny should fight Zab Judah and Mayweather should fight any hand picked opponent to get the ring rust off. There’s no need for any more build up, these two fighters are at the peak of their careers. Both men have been fighter of the year twice, Pacquiao in 2006&2008, and Mayweather in 1998&2007. Pacquiao has beaten the likes of Barrera, Morales, Marquez, Diaz, and now De La Hoya. Mayweather has beaten the likes of Hernandez, Corrales, Castillo, De La Hoya, and Hatton. To put this in perspective towards the Hit Man he has won the zero awards for Fighter Of The Year and has beaten only one legend, Tszyu. The rest of his titles come from Collazo, Maussa, and Urango. Someone has to ask, if it wasn’t for Ricky Hatton fan base would he be getting this opportunity right now?

Pacquiao vs. Judah Early 2009

Someone has to ask, if it wasn’t for Ricky Hatton fan base would he be getting this opportunity right now?
Bob Arum flew to the Philippines this week to celebrate Manny’s 30th birthday, and also talk about future opponents. Before he left, he said " Zab Judah could be a possible opponent for Pacquiao in May 2009." This is by far the best move for Manny right now, Pacquiao has already showed us his power and speed has carried up to the welterweight division, now all we need to know is if his reflexes have. That’s where Zab Judah steps in, one of the fastest men in the division still, Judah will provide that final answer to the question, can Manny deal with the speed of Mayweather’s hands? If Pacquiao handily defeats Judah like he did De La Hoya, there will be no doubt in my mind, the fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao will be the begging of the end of times. Good vs. Evil is how the fans will described this fight; they should title this one Armageddon.

Margarito Calls out Manny Pacquiao

WBA Welterweight Champion Antonio Margarito was quoted this week saying "he would gladly fight Manny Pacquiao." He thought Manny looked so good that he proved he could fight the better welterweights, and he’s not the only person thinking that way. Since the replay of the fight, many people now give Manny a shot at any welterweight right now. Just think in a perfect world if Margarito defeated both Mosley and Cotto, and Pacquiao defeated Judah and Mayweather. How big a fight between them two would be?

HBO Showing Dawson vs. Tarver II

No surprise here, IBF Light Heavyweight Champion Chad Dawson’s next fight will be aired on HBO, what was a surprise is that its against Antonio Tarver. All Tarver proved in the first fight is that he could last twelve rounds with the younger, faster, champion, at no time was this fight close. Bad move for Tarver, he can’t afford back-to-back losses. Risky move for Dawson to but in this case, going to pay-off big, if he defeats Tarver again there’s no way he isn’t the runner up for Joe Calzaghe. That will be huge wins Tomasz Adamek, Glenn Johnson, and Antonio Tarver (twice). Nice way to start your career on HBO.

Wright Finds His Way Back To HBO

Winky Wright was a hot subject this week, first it was reported that HBO turned down a fight between Jermain Taylor and Carl Froch because they wanted Taylor to fight either Mikkel Kessler or Winky Wright, then later that week it came out that Wright was to be featured as the co-main event for Dawson/Tarver II, on March 14th. Isn’t this a win-win situation for Winky? Both fights are very winnable; first, you have J.T. who if you went off his last performance or even his last three performances looks like his best days are passed him. Then on the other hand you have Paul Williams and even though he looked great in his last three performances, they weren’t against a quality opponent like the former undisputed Jr. Middleweight Champion. Wright has a great defense and a sneaky left hand; a prepared Winky Wright might give the young champion some serious growing pains.

Robert Guerrero signs with Golden Boy Promotions

For having the nickname "The Ghost" Robert Guerrero wasn’t that hard to find when he hit the free agency market after winning his arbitration case against his former promoter Dan Goosen. Oscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy promotions wasted no time in acquiring the former 2-Time IBF Featherweight Champion. At the age of 25yr and a record of 22-1-1, 15 KO’s, this young champion is clearly one of the rising stars in the sport. Out of his last seventeen fights his record is 15-1-1, 15 KO’s, and in his four championship fights he’s 4-0, 4 KO’s. Adding Guerrero will immediately help Golden Boy too as there already looking to feature him on the under-card of Margarito/Mosley on January 24th.
