Ode to the Pinoy

By Julian Kasdin

In 1824 Ludwig van Beethoven completed what many consider to be the single greatest piece of music ever written, Symphony Number 9, also known as the Ode to Joy. This singular piece of music has endured through the years as a stunning achievement, due not only to its totality, being the first symphony to combine the orchestral and choral, but also because of the fact that Ludwig van Beethoven was completely deaf while composing this masterpiece. Boxing has its Beethoven, Freddie Roach, and its Symphony Number 9, Manny Pacquiao (50-3-2 38 KOs). No fighter combines the beauty that is the art of boxing, with sheer physicality that only the most preternaturally gifted athletes possess, like Manny Pacquiao. Similarly, no trainer better personifies the will power and mastery of his art than Freddie Roach, despite his body’s continued physical decline due to Parkinson’s disease.

On Saturday night, Manny Pacquiao and Freddie Roach added yet another title to their ever expanding collection when Pacquiao stopped Miguel Cotto (34-2 27 KOs) in 12 rounds. This fight saw Pacquiao collect a title in his seventh weight division, and has set him on a collision course with current lineal welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather (40-0, 25 KOs). Regardless of whether he beats Mayweather or not, Pacquiao has already cemented his place as the greatest fighter of his generation and one of the greatest fighters in history, having captured lineal titles in four weight classes and, as previously mentioned, titles in seven separate weight divisions-two feats unmatched in the history of boxing. In fact, you have to go back to Henry Armstrong and his three lineal titles to find Pacquiao’s equal. Pacquiao’s win Saturday was one of many against the stiffest opposition this sport has to offer, adding Cotto’s name to the likes of Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales, Ricky Hatton, Juan Manuel Marquez, Oscar de la Hoya, and Lehlohonolo Ledwaba.

What is perhaps most interesting in all of this is the partnership between Roach and Pacquiao. Freddie Roach, a former boxer from Massachusetts, compiled a 39-13-0 record with one no-contest as a fighter. Hardly the stuff of legends, his career as a boxer ultimately brought upon him the early onset of Parkinson’s disease. Due to his illness, Roach is gradually losing control over his body. In stark contrast to the supremely talented Pacquiao, Roach’s ability to do even the most mundane tasks deteriorates daily. Yet despite the uphill battle he faces, he has been able to take a cacophony of violence in Manny Pacquiao and shape it into the most complete pugilist many of us will ever see. Unable to physically demonstrate what he seeks to teach his charge, he instead guides him via an understanding of the Sweet Science that very few possess. His almost perfect ability to assess Pacquiao’s strengths and weaknesses, combined with the insight of how to exploit the subtlest weaknesses in the opponent, is the stuff of legend, the kind of artistry that transcends generations.

Many of us may not be able to comprehend just what we have before us. Some simply see Pacquiao as a human wrecking ball, a torrent of punches that leaves an incomparable list of elite victims in its wake. That, however, is merely the overture to this truly great symphony. The punches and their power are to be admired, but it is the combination of physical gifts, skill and mental acuity that is artfully melded by a master that is most awe inspiring. Manny Pacquiao is our Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, a piece of art so singularly great that it stands the test of time; and Freddie Roach is our Beethoven, an incomparable genius who is able to overcome the most daunting of physical challenges, and in doing so leaves his indelible mark on the pugilistic world.

Fight_Net Radio 11/1/09 "Dana White vs Lee Honish"
Explicit
November 01, 2009 07:54 PM PST

“Pro Fight Network & Fight_Net Radio makes wild allegations of the UFC: blood doping, conspiracy, rules tampering, co-ownership of Yahoo, monopolization, organized crime involvement and political tampering.”

FNR & PFN long outspoken position on the UFC came to a head this Sunday as Lee Honish, Chris Greenman and Julian Kasdan Explained every parallel the UFC had from organized crime to fighters that “might be” using banned substances.

The always even keeled and political voice of Pro Fight Network Chris Greenman had this to say “I think Lee is very upset with Dana ‘snubbing’ him after Dana agreed to an information exchange for some breathing room while he put a Yahoo – UFC deal together… Dana didn’t deliver. So Lee, being Lee, blew a gasket and aired every bit of dirty laundry.”

The information ranged from ‘what 10 ten pound for pound fighters do you think are dirty’ to ‘Yahoo, UFC, Dana White, The Fertitta brothers, organized crime and Nevada political figures are all tied together’ to ‘Dana White and Scott Cocker have ties’.

Julian Kasdan co-host of Fight_Net Radio “Its staggering once he (Lee) gets on a roll. The lines he drew are all very accurate. Yahoo, MMAweekly.com and MMAjunkie.com all appear to have some kind of deal with Dana White and the UFC.”

For nearly a month Fight_Net Radio with the support of Pro Fight Network have waged a seemingly endless war with Dana White and the UFC, the insertion and plausibility of anything that they have ‘speculated’ would be hard to dispute by anyone in the MMA community.

Chris Greenman (from Fight_Net Radio) “If the NFL tag is about the national football league, then they don’t have information about the CFL or arena football… They should carry a MMA link for everything other than the UFC or WEC”

To further prove their point Fight_Net Radio then read Yahoo’s top ten pound for pound list. Dan Henderson who recently failed to sign a deal with the UFC fell out of the top 10. Fedor Emelenako considered by many to be the very best fighter pound for pound fighter on the planet is ranked number 3 and is not a UFC fighter and is co-owner of rival M-1 and under contract to Scott Coker’s Strike force franchise (set to air primetime Saturday on CBS television).

Lee Honish had this to say on the whole show “No comment… Wait, the show will stand for itself. Dana White in a candid email asked Chris and I to be more political now that Pro Fight Network is a one of the top websites in the world (top 100,000 website). He shafted me and I’m pissed! Ill say it again, I love the fighters and the fans but there is a difference between a ‘ufc’ fan and a ‘mma’ fan. I’m tired of giving Dana White and the Fertittas a pass to rape and pillage the fans and fighters for their own profit.”

Yahoo had sent this note to the Fight_Net Radio email address:

Dana White the fertitta brothers and UFC LIVE part 2
Explicit
November 01, 2009 12:50 PM PST

He will turn over the control and hosting of the boxing show to the other co-hosts 3.) He will extend invatations to all previous on air talent to return 4.) He will be nice and say no harsh words about fighters, fights and promoters.

This makes it a very very interesting fight if Arreola wins the fight.

From stories to recaps to play by play, there is even the complete pride event Chris Erskine and I covered 2 years ago where Fedor beats Marc Coleman to a pulp. Boxing? How about the best damn boxing episode ever… that’s what its title was.

This is 4 years of select Audio for you to enjoy over the Labor Day Holiday and its about 8 hours of stuff…

Ghost steps up to challenge South Africa’s Klassen

After watching his wife battle leukemia for the past two years, Robert Guerrero isn’t intimidated by tactics that might give other boxers pause.

When he steps in another unfriendly ring in Houston on Saturday night to face an unfamiliar opponent, Guerrero says he won’t think about the taunts lobbed at him by South Africa’s Malcolm Klassen and his trainer. He’ll concentrate on recent ring lessons from Shane Mosley, cemented by the life lessons of Casey Guerrero’s own fight, which she’s winning.

“There’s nothing you can say to me that’s going to get me off my game,” Guerrero said. “People have tried, but I’m focused on winning a title in my second weight class. You can’t get that out of my head by putting something in there.”

Guerrero (24-1-1, 17 KOs) will fight for Klassen’s IBF 130-pound belt shortly before Juan Diaz faces Paulie Malignaggi at the Toyota Center on HBO.

Malignaggi already was an underdog in Diaz’s hometown before he betrayed his distraction by complaining about the ring judges and officials, so nobody will be surprised if Guerrero-Klassen turns out to be a more entertaining, competitive bout.

Guerrero is a two-time featherweight champion who gave up his IBF title last year to move up to 130 pounds. Klassen (24-4-2, 15 KOs) also is a two-time champion who has lost just once since 2001.

Guerrero has traveled to Denmark to win a title fight in front of a hostile, projectile-throwing crowd. He fought a few days after his wife’s cancer diagnosis, a few hours after sleeping on Casey’s hospital room floor, and he defiantly sat out nearly a year while fighting to change promoters.

Yet the Gilroy, Calif., native still faces questions about his determination, largely because of his disappointing no-contest against Daud Yordan last March in which Guerrero said he couldn’t continue because of a second-round cut.

That decision brought criticism on Guerrero, and Klassen’s camp noticed.

“The one area where Guerrero is going to be tested is in the heart department, and we’ve noticed the heart isn’t too big,” Nick Durandt, Klassen’s trainer, said Thursday.

Guerrero usually trains for his fights in his Bay Area hometown, but he moved south to Big Bear for this fight, using the boxing cradle’s high altitudes and resources. He also got six weeks of sparring with Mosley, the 37-year-old champion who can mimic any boxer’s style.

“After all the stuff I’ve gone through the past two years, it was nice to get away,” Guerrero said. “Just being out there isolated from family and friends and being able to just focus on training, it was real relaxing, and it’s what I needed. Now I know why (fighters) go up there.”

The matchup is an intriguing contrast in styles, with The Ghost attempting to counter Klassen’s prodigious work rate with the athleticism that sparked his nickname. Klassen is 3 inches shorter than Guerrero, but throws punches by the dozens.

“This fight will open up doors,” Klassen said. “I’m not a person who needs a lot of money. I just want to make my name.”

The fight also is a risk for Klassen, although he calls Guerrero “a one-dimensional fighter.” Klassen is fighting outside South Africa for just the second time in a career that includes two title belts, but no name recognition in this hemisphere.

“This is the stage you’ve got to perform on if you want to be noticed,” Durandt said. “I believe this was the right decision to make. This was the right voluntary challenger to face. You have to strike when the iron is hot. The iron is hot now.”

Mosley was eager to foster his investment in Guerrero as a partner in Golden Boy Promotions, but he also used the challenge to stay in shape for his next fight, which he expects to happen Dec. 5—though he doesn’t yet have an opponent after being turned down by Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. Negotiations with WBC welterweight champ Andre Berto also have bogged down.

“He has great hitting power for his weight,” Mosley said of Guerrero. “He hits like he’s 170. He doesn’t hit a like a normal guy his weight. … He’s a throwback fighter. He’ll put everything he has into his fights. He’s on time every day, he listens when I tell him something, and he’s not afraid to try things I tell him.”

Diaz gets Malignaggi over decision

HOUSTON (AP)—Juan Diaz thinks he proved that he’s a top contender again. Paulie Malignaggi thinks three judges in Texas prevented him from becoming one.

Diaz beat Malignaggi in a 12-round, unanimous decision on Saturday night to win the vacant NABO junior welterweight championship.

Diaz, a Houston native, fought the last 10 rounds with a bloody cut over his left eye. But the hometown crowd at the Toyota Center cheered every punch Diaz landed, and Malignaggi thought that swayed the judges.

The scorecards were 118-110, 116-112 and 115-113 in favor of Diaz. Malignaggi called the decision “ridiculous” and asked for a rematch in New York City, his hometown.

Diaz (35-2) ran to the four corners of the ring and saluted the cheering fans after the decision was announced, giving him a bounce-back win after he was knocked out by Juan Manuel Marquez at the Toyota Center in February.

“I can fight at 135 pounds, I can fight at 140,” said Diaz. “I think I’m ready to take on anybody now. Whoever wants to fight me, bring it on.”

Marquez will fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. on Sept. 19 and Diaz hopes his victory on Saturday night puts him in line to face the winner of that one. He said he’d also welcome a rematch with Malignaggi.

Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya said Ricky Hatton is another possible opponent for Diaz.

“We like going to the fighter and saying, ‘These are opportunities, but who would you like to fight?”’ De La Hoya said. “We’ll discuss it when the time is right.”

Malignaggi (27-2) said before the fight that he was worried about the judges, especially Gale Van Hoy and Raul Caiz. He pointed out that those two were judges when Houston native Rocky Juarez earned a draw with featherweight champion Chris John at the Toyota Center in February, a decision that Malignaggi thought was unfair.

Van Hoy had the 118-110 scorecard for Saturday’s main even and Malignaggi blasted the judge again. Caiz scored it 115-113 and the third judge, David Sutherland, had the 116-112 score.

“You don’t see too many good decisions in Texas, with out-of-towners against Texas fighters,” Malignaggi said. “I put my two cents in before. I said, ‘I don’t want Gale Van Hoy and I don’t want Raul Caiz.’ Raul had it pretty close. I thought I won the fight, but at least he had it close.

“But there is no way anyone won that fight 118-110,” Malignaggi said. “Gale Van Hoy just filled out his scorecard, on purpose, to (rob) Paulie Malignaggi. I don’t know how Gale Van Hoy keeps getting jobs.”

De La Hoya also questioned Van Hoy’s scorecard, but not the outcome of the fight.

“I’ve been in close fights, just like every other fighter has been in close fights,” De La Hoya said. “Sometimes you’re on the short end. That’s the way boxing is.”

Malignaggi landed 191 punches to Diaz’s 178, according to the official statistics. Malignaggi threw 949 punches to Diaz’s 663 and Malignaggi controlled the hard-charging Diaz with sharp left jabs and quick combinations.

AP - Aug 23, 1:36 am EDT

Diaz hit Malignaggi with a hard right in the last minute of the second round, but by the time the bell sounded, Diaz had blood trickling down his face.

Diaz was also cut over his right eye in the eighth round of the Marquez fight, and Marquez knocked him out in the ninth. Diaz fought through it this time, landing several hard shots in the later rounds.

“I lost two of my fights because of cuts,” Diaz said. “This time, I let my corner work on it, I stayed calm, relaxed and everything worked out.”

Malignaggi, dressed in flourescent purple trunks with black and white tassles, kept attacking Diaz’s eye and the cut started bleeding again in the 10th round.

The hometown crowd chanted “Diaz! Diaz!” in every round, but Malignaggi seemed to have more energy at the end. The two exchanged hard lefts in the final minute and embraced in the middle of the ring when the bell sounded.

Earlier Saturday night, Robert Guerrero stopped Malcolm Klassen in a 12-round, unanimous decision to take Klassen’s IBF junior lightweight belt.

Klassen started landing hard right hands in the fifth round and opened a cut over Guerrero’s left eye by the seventh. Guerrero also said he broke his left hand during the fight, but he used his significant height and reach advantage to keep Klassen at bay.

Also, Danny Jacobs earned the vacant NABO middleweight belt with a 10-round decision over Ishe Smith.

(PressMediaWire) Irvine, CA – IMMAE announced today the official launch of their highly-touted online trade community. The community is entitled the IVTC, an acronym standing for the “IMMAE Virtual Trade Community”. The IVTC will be an online extension of IMMAE’s physical show capabilities.

The world is rapidly changing, and US based markets are experiencing nothing less than an upheaval of epic proportions. The landscape of US based business and advertising methods are changing rapidly and are leaving those not ready to accept these changes far behind. IMMAE has created the IVTC in recognition of this paradigm shift and in recognition of staying current with the times.

The IVTC, which IMMAE believes will be one of the most advanced tradeshow platforms on the planet, will feature a rich set of tools for the IMMAE exhibitor. The IVTC will have online appointment setting, virtual buyer interfacing, product catalog displays, automated advertising management and much more. The IVTC will not stop here, and will offer similar feature sets to fight promotions, buyers, and industry professionals. This will culminate into a highly interactive virtual community focused completely on business, commerce and networking.

The IVTC changes the value proposition that IMMAE offers to its various types of attendees from exhibitors to buyers. It will allow exhibitors to begin interfacing with industry professionals and buyers before the actual tradeshow event, and to continue to do so long after it is over. This means that revenue generation is possible outside the boundaries of a single weekend. IMMAE’s goal is to create increased return on investment for exhibitors and other attendees and to make this platform the definitive and defacto platform which all MMA companies seek to be a part of.

Select exhibitors are already participating in the IVTC beta testing program and wide scale roll out will begin in the next 2 weeks. IMMAE has the ambitious goal of generating revenue and contacts for the majority of its exhibitors by June 1st, 2009, well before the commencement of the show. If successful in this goal, it will set IMMAE apart and ahead of many of the largest mainstream tradeshows which exist today.

You must give it 23 minutes to get to the amazing part! I promise this is the best on ever! The show is dedicated to Arturo Gatti

Boxing Is Missing A Piece of Its Heart Now
By Jason Petock, DoghouseBoxing (July 12, 2009)
Today is a sad and tragic day for all fans
of boxing, as it has been reported that Arturo Gatti
has left this earthly plane. No fighter will be able to replace the ferocity and true heart that Arturo fought with in the ring, a man who literally encompassed what it meant to be a fighter and actually fight for a living, not just go through the motions. He showed us all what a man could do when he would put it all on the line everytime he laced up the gloves, and his loss is saddening and too abrupt. Boxing is missing a large piece of its heart right now that cannot be replaced, that piece was Arturo “Thunder” Gatti.

I actually never had the honor or privilege of meeting Arturo in person. Nor have I ever seen any of his bouts live, although I always wanted to. Out of all of the fighters out there, living or deceased, I honestly have to say that Gatti was truly my favorite. I had tried in vain once to get an interview with him. Luckily, I got to speak to Arturo for about 3 minutes, and as one of his biggest fans, those were the best three minutes of my life. I was humbled when I was told by Danny McDermott
, also a fighter, that Arturo had read an article of mine and that it motivated him and he agreed with what I had written. It made me feel proud that a hero of mine had taken notice of me and my small little world. I’ll never forget any of that.

Boxing media over time hasn’t been particularly too kind to Arturo Gatti. When they weren’t dissecting his opponents, or judging him very harshly, they were immediately rushing him out the door, even when he still had a quarter tank of gas left in the tank. He fought everyone and anyone he could, and refused to duck fighters, something that has become commonplace these days in a weaker society it seems. I always defended the man in my writing, and chose not to follow the crowds, who are generally more interested in sensationalism and less interested in telling the truth. I write as a fan and because I love the sport, and technically I am not a writer. At least in the sense of boxing journalism. Boxing writers write to make money and deface fighters careers often, I write as a fan like I said and make no money doing it.

What is even sadder is that now those very same writers who would slam Arturo Gatti and his career will now hop off of their original bandwagons and get onto other ones, so that they can shine in the fall of a great fighter. I miss you Arturo already, although we never knew one another, you were always a hero of mine and someone who I looked up to and admired from a distance. Your wars in the ring gave me hope in troubling times. You let me know that anything could be accomplished and that it is a man’s heart and will that make him persevere and nothing more. I only wish that I could have met you. Maybe one day I’ll meet you in Heaven, if they’ll take me that is.

Goodbye Arturo “Thunder” Gatti. They say when someone dies that the sky opens up and the angels cry for them. I know they are crying for you as well Champ. You are missed by all and there is a void in boxing where you once were. There can never be a fighter to come along and take your place and your career is inspirational, motivating and a lesson for us all. Rest well Arturo, you’ve earned it.

The best of Fight_Net Radio

Here you go! the stuff that made us famous or me infamous. I have compiled a fun little sampler of segments for you all to enjoy.

By Request, just Elaina Maxwell (last week)!

Elaina Maxwell & James Hergot, great segment doing what the MMA team does best: the news, bagging on Tito’s big head, busting my ass about the Danny Bonaduce fight and most of all trying to get Elaina Maxwell to crack on nudity and guys.

Vault Classics: The best of: Chris Erskine.

The Original ‘Here comes the BOOM’ intro by POD that we used for years. I recently changed it only because I encountered it being used the very same way on 2 different broadcasts (Nobody listens to the show… SURE!)

Chris Erskine, The original Chris Greenman and Julian Kasdin all rolled into one. Here is an excerpt from CBS in San Diego (103.7 freefm, no really I was on real terrestrial radio and still am in a few markets). This call took place right after Danny Bonaduce verbally assaulted me (I included a few clips of him being abusive).

Lidell Vs, Ortiz II Round 3, More with Chris Erskine. Live from the stands, Chris and I with a portable recording device bringing you the final round. Listen to the crowed they are pulling for Ortiz.

IFL Fighting, More with the Chris Erskine Love fest. IFL fighting. Funny as hell. I am just a dick, Chris is trying so hard to be serious.

-Amir Khan W Tech Dec. 5 Marco Antonio Barrera (please read Matt's story on fightnetboxing.com before show). *Were we impressed by Khan's performance, which was helped along by a nasty cut?*What's next for Khan? Marquez, Casamayor or Diaz?*Did Barrera get a fair shake?*Is Barrera finished?*Did Barrera's decision not to quit hurt Robert Guerrero's assertion last week that his cut was too severe to continue? Barrera's cut appeared much worse. -Ola Afolabi TKO 9 Enzo Maccarinelli (please read Matt's story on fightnetboxing.com before show) -Roman Martinez TKO 4 Nicky Cook (please read Matt's story on fightnetboxing.com before show). -Boxing fans definitely got their money's worth Saturday, as the Khan-Barrera PPV telecast featured a total of five entertaining fights - three of which were championship-caliber. It was also a refreshing change to hear the British perspectives on boxing, including a roundtable of former champions that included Johnny Nelson and Glenn McCrory. Former WBC lightweight champion Jim Watt provided the color commentary.Overall, a nice change of pace from the familiar refrains of HBO's Jim Lampley and Co. And a good bargain at $24 for boxing fans. -Lucian Bute KO 4 Fulgencio Zuniga (retains IBF super middleweight title): An easy win for Bute, who looked impressive in dismantling a smaller fighter. One of the finishing punches - a vicious left to the body - was one for the highlight reel. PREVIEW:Vitali Klitschko (36-2) vs. Juan Carlos Gomez (44-1) (ESPN). Klitschko steps in the ring for the first time since dominating Samuel Peter for the WBC title. His opponent is the little-known Gomez, who probably wouldn't have been picked if he didn't have flaws. Roy Jones Jr. (52-5) vs. Omar Sheika (27-8) (PPV): This is part of Jones' combination Boxing-MMA card. Too bad the boxing part isn't PPV-worthy. At this stage of Jones' career, who knows what could happen? Sheika will always be tough. It could end up being interesting. Week in Reviewoh go onames Kirkland TKO 6 Joel Julio: (Everybody, please read Matt's post-fight story before going on air). -Victor Ortiz TKO 2 Mike Arnaouitis: (read Matt's story). -Robert Guerrero No Contest 2 Daud Yordan: (read Matt's story). -Delvin Rodriguez W 12 Shamone Alvarez: Welterweight Rodriguez, two fights removed from his near-disastrous victory over Oscar Diaz, puts himself in good position with a tough win over Alvarez. The fight was non-descript most of the way, with Rodriguez holding a slight edge with his boxing skills. However, he had to hang on for dear life in the final round, as Alvarez rocked him. Rodriguez is getting ever-closer to a title shot. Is he someone who could make noise in the 147-pound ranks? Preview:-Friday, March 13, Lucian Bute (23-0, 18 KOs) vs. Fulgencio Zuniga (22-3-1, 18 KOs), in Montreal (Showtime). The always-exciting IBF super middleweight champ Bute returns to the ring for the first time since his narrow escape against Librado Andrade in October. Zuniga has fought - but come up short - against the best including Daniel Santos (L 12) and Kelly Pavlik (TKO by 9). Saturday, March 14, Amir Khan (19-1, 15 KOs) vs. Marco Antonio Barrera (65-6, 43 KOs) in Manchester, England (PPV): A bizarre - yet intriguing - matchup in the junior lightweight division that features a young up-and-comer and an old warhorse. Barrera hasn't had a major fight since October 2007, when he lost a decision to Manny Pacquiao. Now, he's being asked to upset the bigger, younger, faster Khan in Khan's native England. Not that Khan is invincible. He was knocked out last year by a journeyman. Should be an interesting crossroads fight. Saturday, March 14: Arthur Abraham (28-0, 23 KOs)) Lajuan Simon (21-0-2, 12 KOs) in Kiel, Germany: Abraham keeps busy with an outing against the IBFs No. 11-ranked contender, the nondescript Philadelphian Simon. Probably another easy defense for Abraham, who is angling for a 2009 showdown with Kelly Pavlik. Lapachet Report. This Week in Boxing History:March 9, 1984, Tim Witherspoon W 12 Greg Page: Witherspoon upsets the underachieving Page in a fight that was typical of 1980s heavyweight boxing - dreadfully boring. "Terrible Tim" picked up the WBC heavyweight title that had been stripped from Larry Holmes. March 10, 1986, Marvin Hagler TKO 11 John Mugabi; Thomas Hearns KO 1 James Shuler. In a rainy night in Las Vegas, Hagler gets by "The Beast" in a grueling affair that is 1986's "Fight of the Year" and the "Hitman" destroys Shuler in typical fashion. The next step was supposed to be a rematch of their classic 1985 fight, but it never happened. Hagler instead fought - and lost to - Sugar Ray Leonard. March 13, 1993: Michael Carbajal KO 7 Humberto "Chiquita" Gonzalez: In 1993's "Fight of the Year," Carbajal gets off the canvas twice to knock out archrival Gonzalez. It was the first of three fights. Gonzalez won the next two with careful boxing - refusing to engage Carbajal and earning a reputation as a master stylist. March 13, 1999: Lennox Lewis D 12 Evander Holyfield: Perhaps the worst ripoff in history, Lewis dominates Holyfield over 12 rounds, only to get a draw. Lewis' size and long jab proved the difference, not that it mattered to judge Eugenia Williams, who will forever be infamous for turning in a 115-113 score in favor of Holyfield - who hardly landed a punch all night.

-The big news, obviously, was the suspension of Antonio Margarito by the California State Athletic Commission. It appears that, whatever happens, Margarito's reputation will forever be marred. Let's talk about his legacy, and if he can ever be trusted or liked again. -Juan Urango decisions Herman Ngoudjo to recapture the IBF junior welterweight title he lost to Ricky Hatton two years ago. Urango won on the strength of two third-round knockdowns and constant pressure. Urango is hoping the big win propels him to a money fight with the winner of Pacquiao-Hatton. -Darchinyan vs. Arce, opening thoughts (first Drew, then Matt, then Lee)-Can Arce actually win this fight? What will he have to do to win?-Is Darchinyan too confident for his own good? He did, afterall, get drilled by Nonito Donaire in 07.-What's next for the winner? The loser?-Another fine offering by Showtime.-Another big fight in California Lapachet Report This week in boxing history:Feb. 4, 1984, Donald Curry W 15 Marlon Starling: Curry uses his superior speed and boxing skills to dominate Starling, whom he had narrowly outpointed two years earlier. It was the first indication of Curry's possible greatness, as he retained his WBA welterweight title. Feb. 4, 1989, Marlon Starling TKO 9 Lloyd Honeyghan: Exactly five years to the day of his disappointing loss to Curry, Starling turns in his career-best performance with a thrashing of England's Honeyghan, previously considered the best 147-pounder in the world. With the win, Starling won the WBC welterweight title. Feb. 6, 1988, Greg Haugen W 15 Vinny Pazienza: Eight months after losing a controversial split decision to Pazienza in Paz's hometown of Cranston, R.I., Haugen exacts revenge with a sterling performance. No controversy this time, as "Mutt" Haugen cruises to victory behind a stiff left jab and fine boxing skills. Feb. 6, 1987, Mark Breland KO 7 Harold Volbrecht: Amateur star Breland wins his first world title with an easy knockout of South Africa's Volbrecht, an undeserving title challenger.

LaPACHET REPORT By Andrew Lapachet FightNetBoxing.com JONES BACK IN RING AND THE RISE OF THE HEAVYWEIGHTS Interesting fights on tap for boxing's glamour division Ring legend Roy Jones Jr. (52-5, 38 KO’s) isn’t done fighting yet. Reports are that will fight journeyman Omar Sheika (27-8, 18 KO’s) in his hometown of Pensacola , Florida. In what looks to be the ex-four division champ’s last fight, Jones couldn’t have picked an easier opponent. Sheika has never been a world champion, even though he has fought for a title four times. He has just one noticeable win, a victory over Glen Johnson, but that was nine years ago. He hasn’t fought in almost a year-and-a-half, and has had just three fights in four years (1-2, 1 KO). Yes sir, it sounds like Jones’ farewell tour is in full gear now. If he loses this fight, he’ll retire on the spot. If he wins, he’ll live to fight another day. That’s usually how these situations work -Could it be the heavyweights might be on the upside in 2009. Some intriguing matchups are being signed and considered early in the year. First up will be WBC champion Vitali Klitschko (36-2, 35 KO’s), who is set up to face former cruiserweight WBC champion Juan Carlos Gomez (44-1, 35 KO’s) on March 21. Then, this week (WHO?) reported that negotiations between IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (52-3, 46 KO’s) and former WBC, WBO, WBA cruiserweight Champion David Haye (22-1, 21 KO’s) were going along fine despite a few small snags. Reportedly, if Haye’s match-up with Wladimir falls apart, the younger Klitschko would then go after undefeated Chris Arreola (24-0, 21 KO’s). Maybe there’s hope for the heavyweights after all. -Fresh off his knockout victory over Manuel Esparza on January 14, super middleweight Edison Miranda wasted no time calling out his next opponent. Last week, Miranda called out former middleweight champ Jermain Taylor, who is looking for a March opponent on Showtime. Reportedly, Miranda feels this fight should have been made two years ago but felt that it never happened because of his inability to make 160 pounds. Now that they’re both fighting at 168 pounds and healthy, Miranda feels there’s no reason a fight shouldn’t be made now. Both fighters’ are at the crossroads of their careers, and it would make for an interesting fight. Other names that have been mentioned as Taylor ’s March opponent: Carl Froch, Allen Green, and Andre Ward. -Junior welterweight Vivian Harris has reportedly dropped out of his proposed fight against rising prospect Victor Ortiz (23-1, 18 KO’s) because of managerial issues. The fight was to be the co-feature on HBO’s tripleheader on March 7. Now it looks like Ortiz is going to be matched up against seasoned veteran in “Mighty” Mike Arnoutis (21-2-2, 10 KO’s). Mighty Mike will be a good test for the young Oxnard native. In 2004, he fought former world champion Juan Urango to a draw and in 2007 he had back-to-back decision loses to Ricardo Torres and Kendall Holt. That’s three fights with three top ten contenders – one who happens to be a champion (Holt), and one who could be (Urango fights for the vacant IBF junior welterweight title Friday on ESPN2). Throw in the fact that Arnoutis also has stopped solid veterans like Juaquin Gallardo and Jesse Feliciano, and he starts looking like a harder opponent than the first option, Harris.

1.SHANE MOSLEY TKO 9 ANTONIO MARGARITO.

Well, so much for the “experts.” Mosley, appearing reborn, destroyed 4-1 favorite Margarito to win the WBA welterweight title before the largest crowd in Staples Center history – 20,820. It was a stunningly brilliant performance for “Sugar Shane,” who won his first world title 12 years ago and beat Oscar De La Hoya in the same building almost nine years ago. Plenty to talk about as Mosley’s win is an early candidate for “Upset of the Year.”

Topics for discussion

-Intro (throw it to Adam, who was live at the fight; let him give his impressions of the sights and sounds at the Staples Center ).

After Adam’s intro, throw it to the rest of us for a brief summary of how we saw the fight and how we felt Mosley won.

Then start with the following specific questions.

-Was Mosley that good or Margarito that bad?

-What happened to Margarito? And did the hand-wrapping controversy beforehand affect his focus?

-Speaking of the hand-wrapping controversy, does the California State Athletic Commission’s revelation of an illegal pad in Margarito’s handwraps before Saturday’s fight taint Margarito? Does it taint his July victory over Miguel Cotto and the other big victories of his career?

-What’s next for Mosley? He has suddenly set himself up for huge paydays against the likes of the Manny Pacquiao-Ricky Hatton winner, a third fight with Oscar De La Hoya or possibly a rematch with Miguel Cotto. Does he have a chance against Pacquiao?
